A road captain is an experienced cyclist who takes charge of a team’s strategy during a live race. While the team director stays in the car, the road captain stays in the middle of the action to make split-second decisions. They tell their teammates when to chase a breakaway, when to protect the lead sprinter, and when to save energy.
This role requires deep knowledge of the sport and the ability to read the wind and the road. A good road captain keeps the team organized and motivated during stressful moments. They act as the eyes and ears for the team leader who needs to focus purely on the win.
For example, a veteran road captain might notice a change in wind direction and tell the team to move to the front to avoid getting dropped. They are the unsung heroes who ensure the team’s plan is executed perfectly. Their leadership is often the difference between winning and losing.
