A time cut is a rule in stage racing that sets a maximum allowed time for riders to finish. Organizers calculate this limit as a percentage of the winning rider’s time for that specific day’s stage. If a rider finishes slower than this calculated time, they are officially disqualified from the rest of the race.
This ensures that the event stays on schedule and that the athletes maintain a professional level of speed. For example, if the winner takes four hours and the cut is ten percent, everyone must finish within twenty-four minutes.
On very difficult mountain days, the time cut becomes a major source of stress for the slower sprinters.
