An ankle tap is a defensive move where a player dives to trip an opponent. This is often a last-resort tackle when the defender cannot reach the runner’s waist. The defender lunges forward and uses their hand to flick the runner’s foot or ankle. Even a light touch can cause a sprinting player to lose balance and fall. This move requires perfect timing and great accuracy to work effectively at high speeds. It is a spectacular way to stop a certain score when a player is breakaway. While it looks simple, it is a very difficult skill to master during a chase. For example, a winger might be sprinting toward the goal line with no one in front. A trailing defender dives and taps the winger’s heel, sending them tumbling into the grass. This brave effort saves the team from conceding points at the last second. It is a classic move for fast defenders.
