The ball-carrier is simply the player who has physical possession of the rugby ball. This player is the primary target for the opposing team’s defenders. Their job is to run forward and gain territory for their team. They must protect the ball from being stripped or knocked out during a tackle. When they are tackled, they must place the ball on the ground immediately. This allows their teammates to arrive and protect the ball at a ruck. Being a good carrier requires strength, balance, and very quick decision-making skills. For example, a powerful forward might be the ball-carrier crashing into a wall of defenders. They try to stay standing as long as possible to help their team advance. Every attacking move starts with a brave ball-carrier leading the way.
