Bridge Meaning in Rugby Union

A bridge is a supportive position a player takes over a teammate who is on the ground. The player stands over the fallen teammate with their feet wide and hands on the floor or the body. This creates a human shield that protects the ball from being stolen by the opposing team. It is a common sight at the start of a ruck before more players join the pile. The player must stay on their feet and not fall over the person on the grass. If they collapse or seal off the ball completely, the referee will blow the whistle for a foul. A strong bridge allows the scrum-half to pick up the ball safely and start the next play. For example, a forward might bridge over their captain after a hard tackle near the goal line. This solid protection keeps the ball available for the next runner to try and score. It is a selfless act of teamwork.
