A chip kick is a short and high kick sent just over the heads of the defensive line. The attacking player kicks the ball softly so it lands in the open space behind the defenders. This move is designed to catch the defense while they are moving forward to make a tackle. The kicker or a teammate then sprints past the defenders to catch the ball on the bounce. It requires delicate touch and perfect timing to ensure the ball stays within reach of the attackers. If the kick is too long, the opposing full-back will catch it easily. When executed correctly, it is one of the most exciting ways to break a stagnant defense. For example, a fly-half might chip the ball over a rushing defender to themselves. They catch it in stride and sprint away to score a beautiful solo try. It is a clever skill.
