A clean-out is the act of physically removing defenders from the area around a tackled player. When a ruck forms, attacking players arrive to push the opposing defenders away from the ball. This ensures that the scrum-half has a clear and safe space to pick up the ball and pass. Players must use their shoulders and arms to drive the opposition backward legally. They must enter from behind the gate and stay on their feet to avoid committing a foul. A successful clean-out is essential for maintaining the speed and flow of an attacking move. Without it, the ball gets trapped and the defense can easily steal possession on the ground. For example, a large forward might dive into a ruck to knock two defenders off the ball. This clean-out allows the team to keep attacking with fast and organized play. It is a tough job.
