A contestable kick is a high, short kick designed to give the kicking team a fifty-fifty chance to win the ball back. Instead of kicking for distance, the player sends the ball high into the air over a short distance. This allows their own teammates to sprint forward and jump for the ball at the same time as the defenders. It creates a high-pressure situation where the team that jumps highest or has the best timing wins possession. These kicks are often used to test the nerves and catching ability of the opposing full-back. If the kicking team wins the ball, they are often in a great position to score a try. It is a tactical gamble that rewards bravery and athletic jumping skills. For example, a fly-half might launch a high bomb that hangs in the air for several seconds. Their winger sprints down the field and catches it over the defender to keep the attack alive. It is a thrilling aerial battle.
