Dissent happens when a player vocally or physically disagrees with a referee’s decision. Rugby has a famous culture of respect where only the captain should discuss calls with the official. Any other player shouting at the referee or waving their arms in frustration risks a penalty. This behavior is taken very seriously because it undermines the authority needed to control a physical game. If a player shows dissent, the referee can move the ball ten metres forward for the opposing team. This penalty often puts the other team in a perfect position to kick a goal or score. It is a mental error that can cost a team dearly in tight matches. For example, a frustrated defender might scream at the referee after a foul call near the goal. The referee will blow the whistle again and move the penalty much closer to the posts. It teaches players to stay calm and focused.
