Drop-out Meaning in Rugby Union

A drop-out is a way to restart the game by kicking the ball from the center of the 22-metre line. This happens after the attacking team kicks the ball into the opponent’s in-goal area and it is grounded. It also occurs if the ball is kicked out of bounds past the dead-ball line by the attackers. The defending team takes a drop kick, which means the ball must hit the ground before being struck. The kick must travel at least ten metres forward to be legal and bring the ball back into play. This allows the defending team to clear the ball deep and move the action away from their goal. It is a tactical opportunity to reset the field position and gain some much-needed breathing room under pressure. For example, after a missed drop goal attempt, the team will line up for a 22-metre drop-out. The kicker sends the ball high and long to restart the physical contest for possession. It is a standard restart.
