The first receiver is the attacking player who catches the ball directly from the scrum-half. This person is usually the fly-half, who acts as the primary playmaker for the entire team. Their job is to decide whether to run, pass, or kick based on the defensive line. They must have excellent vision and very quick hands to handle the ball under intense pressure. As soon as they catch the ball, defenders will sprint forward to tackle them as fast as possible. The first receiver sets the tempo and direction for every attacking move during the game. This role requires a calm mind and the ability to execute complex plays while being chased. For example, the scrum-half passes the ball out of a ruck to the fly-half standing in the middle. The fly-half then chooses to kick a high bomb for the wingers to chase down the field. They are the tactical engine of the side.
