A fly-kick is a move where a player kicks the ball while it is moving on the grass. Instead of picking the ball up, the player strikes it with their foot as if playing soccer. This is often done when the ball is loose, and there is no time to grab it safely. It is an effective way to move the ball forward quickly without risking a knock-on or a turnover. However, it can be unpredictable because the rugby ball is oval and bounces in strange directions. Players must be careful not to kick an opponent while attempting to strike the moving ball. If done correctly, it can turn a messy situation into a great scoring opportunity for the team. For example, a player might fly-kick a loose ball toward the opponent’s goal line during a chase. They then sprint past the defenders to dive on the ball for a spectacular and lucky try. It is a gamble of skill.
