The forwards are the eight players on a team who do the heavy physical work. They wear jerseys numbered one through eight and are typically the largest athletes on the pitch. Their primary job is to win possession of the ball during scrums, lineouts, rucks, and mauls. They use their size and strength to push the opposing team backward and create space for the backs. Forwards spend much of the game in intense physical contact, fighting for control of the grass. While they are often slower than the backs, their stamina and power are vital for victory. A game is often won or lost based on which group of forwards dominates the physical battle. For example, a team’s forwards might spend ten minutes pushing against the defense near the goal line. Their hard work eventually creates a gap for a teammate to dive over and score. They are the engine of the team.
