A Garryowen is a tactical high kick designed to put the opposing full-back under extreme pressure. It is named after the Irish club that made the move famous many years ago. The kicker sends the ball very high into the air so that it hangs for several seconds. This gives the kicking team’s players enough time to sprint down the field and arrive just as the ball lands. The goal is to tackle the defender the moment they catch the ball or force them to drop it. It creates a high-pressure aerial contest that can lead to a turnover or a try. This move requires great leg strength and a perfectly timed chase from the teammates. For example, a fly-half might launch a Garryowen toward the opponent’s goal area during a rainy match. The defender fumbles the wet ball under pressure, allowing an attacker to dive on it for a score. It is a classic pressure tactic.
