The gate is an imaginary entry point at the back of a ruck or tackle through which players must enter. It is defined by the width of the players who are already involved in the physical contest on the ground. To join the ruck legally, a player must come from directly behind the feet of their last teammate. Entering from the side is a foul because it is considered an unfair way to reach the ball.
