Hands on the ball refers to a player’s right to compete for the ball immediately after a tackle. A defender can only put their hands on the ball if they are on their feet and have clearly released the tackled player. This is a critical moment in the game where a player can legally steal possession from the opponent. To do this, they must arrive at the tackle area from behind the gate and stay balanced. If they are leaning on the ground or the tackled player, they cannot touch the ball. This rule rewards players who have great timing and the strength to snatch the ball quickly. It is the primary way a team wins a turnover during open play on the field. For example, a flanker might tackle an opponent and jump back to their feet instantly. They put their hands on the ball to rip it away before a ruck can form. It is a perfectly legal and skillful steal.
