HIA stands for Head Injury Assessment and is a vital safety protocol used to protect players from concussions. If a player receives a blow to the head, the referee or a doctor can order them to leave the field. The player then goes to a quiet medical room for a series of physical and memory tests. This process takes about twelve minutes to ensure the player is safe to continue the high-contact match. A temporary substitute can join the game while the injured player is being checked by the medical staff. If the player fails the HIA, they are not allowed to return to the pitch for any reason. This system ensures that the long-term health of the athlete always comes before the result of the game. For example, a player might look dizzy after a heavy collision and be sent for an HIA by the doctor.
