An in-goal judge is an official who stands behind the dead-ball line to assist the referee with scoring calls. Their primary role is to watch closely and decide if a player successfully touched the ball down for a try. They also help determine if the ball or a player went out of bounds in the scoring area during a play. In many modern professional games, this role has been replaced by the Television Match Official and high-tech cameras. However, they are still used in some competitions to provide a human eye on the most critical part of the field. Their presence ensures that the referee has the best possible information before making a final decision on a score. For example, a winger might dive for the corner in a very crowded and messy pile of bodies. The in-goal judge will signal to the referee that the ball was grounded correctly before the player hit the line. It ensures the integrity of every point scored.
