An inside ball is a tactical pass thrown to a teammate who is running back toward the center of the pitch. Instead of passing the ball wide toward the sideline, the ball-carrier flicks it to a runner coming from behind their shoulder. This move is designed to catch defenders who are moving sideways to cover the outside players. By changing the direction of the attack suddenly, the runner can find a gap in the defensive line. It requires perfect timing and a deep understanding between the two players involved. For example, a fly-half might draw a defender toward the wing and then pop an inside ball to a charging center. The center sprints through the space the defender just left to gain twenty metres. It is a classic move to break a shifting defense.
