A jackal is a player who specializes in stealing the ball from an opponent immediately after a tackle. To do this legally, the player must stay on their feet and be the first person to reach over the tackled player. They must arrive from “behind the gate” and use their hands to rip the ball away or force a penalty. This role requires immense core strength, fast reflexes, and a lack of fear during heavy contact. Flankers are usually the best jackals on a team because they are the first to arrive at a breakdown. A successful jackal can instantly turn a defensive stand into a fast-paced counter-attack. For example, a number seven might tackle an opponent and instantly spring to their feet to grab the ball. If the tackled player doesn”t let go, the jackal wins a penalty for their team. It is a game-changing skill.
