Jersey Tugging Meaning in Rugby Union

Jersey tugging is the act of pulling or holding an opponent’s shirt to slow them down or stop their run. While grabbing a jersey during a tackle is legal, pulling it when the player doesn’t have the ball is a foul. Defenders sometimes use small tugs to prevent an attacking player from reaching a pass or support play. This is considered “interference” and is often checked by the assistant referees on the sidelines. If caught, the referee will award a penalty against the player who did the tugging. It is a common tactic in tight areas where the referee might have a blocked view of the players. For example, a defender might tug a runner’s jersey to stop them from chasing a tactical chip kick. The referee will blow the whistle and penalize the defender for obstructing the player’s run. It is a minor but illegal trick.
