A long release is a technique used by a tackled player to move the ball. After hitting the ground, the player reaches back as far as possible with their arms. They place the ball on their own side to keep it away from the defenders. This creates a clear gap between the ball and the opposing team’s reach. It gives the attacking teammates more time to arrive and protect the possession. The player must release the ball immediately once it is placed on the turf. For example, a tackled center will stretch his arms toward his own team while lying down. This makes it much easier for his scrum-half to pick up the ball and continue. A good long release prevents the defense from stealing the ball in a ruck. It is a vital skill for maintaining the flow of an attacking sequence. Referees reward players who show a clear effort to make the ball available. It turns a successful tackle into a manageable phase of play.
