Loosehead Meaning in Rugby Union

The loosehead prop is the player who wears the number one jersey in the scrum. They sit on the left side of the front row during a scrum reset. Their name comes from the fact that their head is on the outside of the scrum.

This player has one arm free, which gives them a different role than the other prop. They must be incredibly strong to resist the pressure from the opposing tighthead prop. Their job is to keep the scrum stable and prevent it from rotating or collapsing.

For example, a loosehead will use his free arm to bind onto the opposing player’s jersey. This grip helps him leverage his body weight to win the physical contest. Outside of scrums, they are heavy hitters who carry the ball and make big tackles.

They provide the raw power needed to secure the ball in rucks and mauls. A great loosehead is the cornerstone of a successful and intimidating forward pack.
