An overlap occurs when the attacking team has more players in a certain area than the defense. This usually happens on the wings when the ball is moved faster than the defenders can slide across. Having an overlap is the ultimate goal for an attacking backline during a match. It means there is a free player who can run to the goal line without being tackled. To exploit an overlap, players must draw their defenders and pass the ball at the perfect moment. For example, three attackers might find themselves facing only two defenders near the sideline. By passing the ball to the outside man, the team easily bypasses the remaining defense for a try. This situation rewards teams that can pass accurately and maintain their spacing. It often results from a clever tactical move or a defender making a mistake. Finding and using the overlap is a sign of a high-quality and intelligent offense. It is one of the most common ways teams break a stalemate to score points.
