Abeam describes a position directly to the side of a boat at right angles. This term helps sailors communicate the location of landmarks or other nearby vessels. Objects located abeam sit exactly halfway between the front and the back sections.
A navigator spots a red buoy sitting abeam while entering a narrow harbor. Knowing this position helps the captain time a turn into a specific channel. Crew members use this reference point to coordinate maneuvers during a crowded race.
This angle also helps sailors determine the direction of the wind relative to the boat. Constant communication about abeam objects prevents collisions with other boats in busy shipping lanes.
