Afterdeck Meaning in Sailing

The afterdeck is the open surface area located at the very back of a boat. This deck space often sits behind the main cockpit or the steering station. Sailors use this area to store extra gear or to manage rear docking lines. A crew member stands on the afterdeck to toss a rope to the pier. This part of the boat must stay clear of obstructions for safety reasons. Structural supports for the backstay usually attach to the strong frame of the afterdeck. On larger yachts, this space might serve as a lounge area for the guests. Maintaining a dry afterdeck prevents the crew from slipping during difficult docking maneuvers.
