Air Draft Meaning in Sailing

Air draft measures the height of a boat from the waterline to the top. This vertical distance includes the mast, antennas, and any other tall equipment on deck. Knowing this measurement is critical for passing safely under bridges or power lines. A captain checks the air draft before sailing under a low highway bridge. If the mast is too tall, the boat will strike the solid structure. This measurement changes slightly depending on how much cargo or fuel the boat carries.
