Amidships describes the central part of a boat between the front and the back. This middle section is usually the widest and most stable area on the vessel. Most heavy equipment and engines sit amidships to keep the boat balanced in water. A sailor stands amidships to help pull a heavy rope during a turn. This location experiences the least amount of movement when the boat hits large waves. Navigators use this point as a reference for measuring the total length of the boat. Placing weight in this center area helps the boat move smoothly through the sea. Proper balance amidships ensures the vessel remains level and easy for the captain to steer.
