Ballast is heavy material placed low in a boat to provide stability. This weight acts as a counterforce to the wind pushing against the tall sails. Most modern boats use lead or iron inside a keel for this specific purpose. A designer adds ballast to prevent the boat from tipping over in a gust. This low weight keeps the center of gravity near the bottom of the hull. Some boats use water tanks as moveable ballast to adjust for different sailing angles. Without enough ballast, a boat would be too unstable to carry large racing sails. Proper weight placement ensures the boat stays upright and safe on the open ocean.
