A boarding ladder provides a safe way for people to climb into a boat. This equipment usually attaches to the flat rear section or the side of the hull. Some models fold up against the rail while others slide down into the water. The steps must reach deep enough to allow a swimmer to find a foothold. This tool remains essential for safety in case a person falls over the side. One example occurs when a sailor lowers a metal ladder to help a diver. The diver uses the sturdy rungs to climb back onto the dry deck. Nonslip surfaces on the steps prevent feet from sliding in wet or wavy conditions.
