Bollard Meaning in Sailing

A bollard is a short and sturdy vertical post used for securing heavy mooring lines. These thick metal or wooden structures sit on the ship deck or the stone pier. Sailors wrap large ropes around the post in a specific pattern to hold the boat. The wide top prevents the loops of rope from sliding off during a high tide. This tool provides a massive amount of holding power for vessels of every different size. One example occurs when a crew member throws a thick rope over a dock bollard. The rope holds the ship securely against the pier while the cargo is being loaded. Heavy steel construction ensures the post can withstand the pulling force of a large ocean ship. These posts often come in pairs called bitts when they are located on the ship. Using a bollard allows a small crew to control the movement of a very heavy vessel. Regular maintenance prevents rust from weakening the attachment between the post and the solid ground.
