A chain locker represents a dedicated storage compartment for the heavy anchor chain and rope. This space is usually located in the very front of the boat near the bow. It features a drain to allow the water and mud from the anchor to exit. Keeping the heavy chain low in the hull helps maintain the stability of the boat. The compartment must be organized to prevent the chain from tangling during a fast drop. An example happens when a sailor pulls the anchor back onto the boat after a trip. The mechanical winch drops the muddy chain directly into the small locker for storage. This keeps the wet and dirty equipment away from the clean living areas of boat. Proper ventilation prevents the growth of mold and the corrosion of the metal chain. Regular cleaning of the locker ensures that the anchor system remains ready for immediate use. This functional space is a standard feature on every well-equipped modern cruising sailboat.
