Early Start Meaning in Sailing

An early start occurs when a boat crosses the starting line of a race before the final signal. In competitive sailing, this is a foul that requires the boat to return and start again or face a time penalty. Sailors use stopwatches and GPS data to time their approach to the line with extreme precision. The goal is to cross the line at full speed exactly as the starting gun or horn sounds.
