Fix Meaning in Sailing

A fix represents a highly accurate and verified position of a boat on a navigation chart. Unlike an estimated position, a fix is determined using at least two or three independent references, such as visual bearings of landmarks or satellite GPS coordinates. This provides the navigator with a “known” starting point for future calculations and path planning. One clear example involves a navigator taking a compass bearing on a lighthouse and a distant radio tower. Where the two lines cross on the paper chart is the boat’s fix. Obtaining a regular fix is essential for safety, especially when navigating near hidden rocks or narrow channels. It allows the captain to see exactly how much the wind or current has pushed the boat off its intended course. In modern sailing, electronic plotters provide a continuous fix, but traditional skills remain a vital backup for every serious mariner.
