Gate Meaning in Sailing

A gate represents an opening in the lifelines (the safety wires around the deck) that allows the crew to board or leave the boat. These are usually located on the sides (midships) or at the stern and are secured with a specialized hook called a ‘pelican hook.’ Having a gate makes it much easier to step from a dock or a dinghy onto the deck without climbing over the wires. One specific example involves a sailor opening the side gate to allow a passenger to step onto the boat while carrying heavy bags. The gate must be securely closed and locked before the boat leaves the harbor to maintain the safety of the crew. Regular inspection of the gate hardware ensures that it will not accidentally open under the weight of a person. It is a vital feature for both convenience and safety during docking procedures. Most modern cruising boats feature at least two gates for easy access.
