A mark represents a specific object, usually a buoy or a permanent landmark, that serves as a turning point or a boundary on a race course. Sailors must pass these marks in a specific order and on a specific side to complete the race legally. One specific example involves a fleet of boats crowding around a ‘windward mark’ to begin their journey back downwind. Marks are often chosen based on the wind direction to ensure the race includes both upwind and downwind legs. Missing a mark or hitting one with the boat usually results in a penalty or disqualification. They are the ‘checkpoints’ of the maritime racing world.
