The masthead represents the very top of the mast, which houses critical equipment like the wind vane, the VHF antenna, and the anchor light. It also contains the ‘sheaves’ (pulleys) for the halyards that raise the sails to the top of the rig. One specific example involves a sailor going ‘aloft’ (climbing the mast) to replace a burnt-out light bulb at the masthead. Because the weight at the masthead has a significant effect on the boat’s stability, designers try to keep this area as light as possible. A ‘masthead rig’ is a design where the forestay goes all the way to the top of the mast. It is the highest point on a vessel and the first part to be seen from a distance.
