The mizzen is a smaller mast and sail located toward the back of a boat. This extra sail helps balance the vessel and provides power in specific wind conditions. It is found on boats with two or more masts, such as a ketch or yawl. A sailor raises the mizzen to keep the bow pointed into the wind while resting. This sail makes the boat easier to handle for a small crew during a long trip. It also acts as a stabilizer to reduce the rocking motion of the boat in waves. Designers place the mizzen behind the main mast to improve the steering balance of the hull. Using the mizzen sail allows for better control during heavy weather on the ocean.
