Running lights are the specific set of red, green, and white lights a boat must display between sunset and sunrise or in low visibility. A ‘port’ light is red, a ‘starboard’ light is green, and a ‘stern’ light is white; these help other vessels identify your position, size, and direction of travel. One specific example involves a sailor checking that their green starboard light is working before leaving the harbor for a night passage. By looking at another boat’s running lights, you can determine if they are moving toward you or away from you and which side has the right of way. These lights are a legal requirement and are essential for avoiding night-time collisions.
