Breathing technique in weightlifting involves specific patterns of air intake to stabilize the spine. Lifters typically take a deep breath into the belly before starting a difficult movement. They hold this air to create internal pressure that supports the lower back muscles. This pressurized core acts like a natural belt to keep the torso very rigid. The athlete then exhales forcefully once they pass the most difficult part of the lift. Controlled breathing prevents dizziness and ensures the body stays strong under a heavy load. A lifter takes a large breath before descending into a heavy barbell back squat. Bracing the stomach after the inhale provides the necessary tension to lift the weight safely.
