Chalk Meaning in Weightlifting

Weightlifting chalk consists of magnesium carbonate used to keep the hands dry and secure. Lifters rub this white powder on their palms to absorb sweat and moisture. This substance increases the friction between the skin and the steel of the barbell. A better grip allows the athlete to hold heavy weights without the bar slipping. Chalk also helps prevent the formation of painful blisters and skin tears during training. Most gyms provide a bowl or bucket filled with this powder for all members. An athlete applies a thin layer to their hands before attempting a new personal record. Using too much powder can actually make the grip less stable on the bar.
