Change Plates Meaning in Weightlifting

Change plates are small weighted discs used to increase a barbell load by tiny amounts. These discs usually weigh between zero point five and five kilograms each. Athletes add these to the bar when they want to beat a personal record. They often feature bright colors like white or green to show their specific weight. These plates sit on the outside of the larger bumper plates on the bar. Using small jumps in weight helps lifters build strength without risking a sudden injury. A lifter adds one kilogram to their total to win a close competition. Securing these plates with a metal collar prevents them from sliding during the lift.
