A clean deadlift is a strength exercise that mimics the start of a clean. The lifter pulls the barbell from the floor to a standing position. This movement focuses on using the legs rather than the back to lift. The athlete keeps their hips low and their chest high during the entire pull. This specific posture builds the muscle memory needed for more explosive Olympic lifts. Unlike a standard deadlift the shoulders stay directly over or slightly in front of the bar. A weightlifter performs five repetitions of this move to strengthen their pulling posture. Keeping the bar close to the shins prevents the weight from drifting forward.
