Early arm bend occurs when a lifter flexes the elbows before the barbell reaches the hips. This common technical error reduces the vertical power generated by the large muscles in the legs. Straight arms act like long cables that transfer force directly from the ground to the weight. Bending the arms too soon causes the bar to slow down during the most critical phase. It also pushes the barbell away from the body which makes the catch much harder. A lifter might accidentally bend their arms while trying to muscle a heavy snatch upward. Keeping the arms relaxed and straight ensures the legs do all the heavy work.
