Elbow lock describes the full extension of the arms to support a weight overhead. This stable position is mandatory for a successful lift in the snatch or jerk. The athlete pushes the elbows straight until the joint reaches its natural end range. Failing to lock the arms results in a red light from the competition referees. A soft or bent elbow cannot safely support heavy loads during an intense lifting meet. The lifter must hold this rigid posture until the head judge gives the down signal. An athlete locks their elbows instantly upon catching a heavy barbell in the snatch. Maintaining this solid overhead lock prevents the weight from crashing down on the lifter.
