Grip width refers to the distance between the hands on the weighted barbell shaft. This measurement varies significantly between the two main Olympic lifts used in competition. A snatch requires a very wide grip to shorten the travel distance of the bar. The clean and jerk uses a narrower grip at roughly shoulder width apart. Finding the correct width allows the athlete to use their biomechanics most effectively. It also ensures the bar rests in the proper position on the body. A lifter measures their grip by extending their arms out to the sides. Using consistent hand markings on the bar ensures the grip remains the same.
