Hang Clean Meaning in Weightlifting

The hang clean is a lift where the barbell starts above the floor. The athlete holds the bar at the mid thigh or knee level before pulling. This variation removes the initial pull from the floor to focus on explosive power. Lifters use this move to improve their speed during the second phase of the lift. It also teaches the athlete how to move their body under the bar quickly. This exercise builds strong hips and a fast turnover of the elbows for the catch. A lifter performs three sets from the hang to improve their technical timing. Keeping the shoulders over the bar ensures a vertical path for the heavy weight.
