The high hang clean is a variation where the bar starts at the hips. The athlete stands almost upright and performs a very short and explosive pulling motion. This drill emphasizes the final contact point where the bar meets the upper thighs. It requires the lifter to have extremely fast feet and very quick elbow rotation. Coaches use this to fix athletes who have a slow transition under the weight. Because the distance is so short the lifter must be perfectly precise with timing. A weightlifter performs five high hang cleans to warm up their fast twitch muscles. Keeping the torso vertical during the dip ensures the bar travels straight up.
