Hip extension describes the forceful straightening of the hip joint during a heavy lifting movement. This action generates the primary power needed to move the barbell from the floor upward. Athletes squeeze their glutes and drive their hips forward to complete the vertical extension. A lifter reaches full hip extension at the peak of a heavy power clean. Failing to reach this point results in a weak pull and a missed lift. Strong hip extension is the most critical component of successful Olympic style weightlifting.
