The jerk is the second part of the clean and jerk lift in weightlifting. An athlete drives the barbell from the shoulders to an overhead locked arm position. Most lifters use a split stance with one foot forward to catch the weight. A competitor successfully completes the jerk and waits for the signal to drop. Keeping the core tight prevents the spine from arching under the heavy overhead load. The jerk requires a combination of leg power, shoulder stability, and perfect timing.
